Shrove Tuesday, aka Fat Tuesday, aka Mardi Gras begins the Lent season, which culminates with Easter, the time Christ was crucified and rose from his tomb. Today then, is Ash Wednesday, the first official day of Lent. On Shrove Tuesday, you are supposed to use up your richer, fatter foods (such as flour, milk, butter etc) because you fast and give up something important during Lent.
Today, we'll burn last year's Lenten palms and I'll attend church and the priest will spread some of that ash on my forehead in the shape of a cross. I'll also fast and not eat meat today.
Fasting generally means refraining from eating for a period of time.
This is done in different ways for different things, but in Catholicism, it means eating one normal meal and two smaller meals that together don't equal the normal meal. And no meat.
